AN INNOVATIVE PROJECT HELPING TO SOLVE A GLOBAL PROBLEM.

January 2024 – Hive’s comprehensive update to its planning application has been submitted to Nottinghamshire County Council.

Over the past few months we have been working with statutory bodies, operators, and local stakeholders to carefully address issues raised in relation to the original application.  Hive and its expanded team of advisors have prepared a new working scheme, operational controls, and a restoration scheme with substantial gains for biodiversity and improved access to nature. An Environmental Statement Addendum is part of the submission and responds to the Nottinghamshire County Council request for further information.

The submission has now been made to Nottinghamshire County Council, the planning authority. They will soon publish it on their website and engage with statutory consultees. View our ‘Overview of Revised Proposals’ document here.

The full submission can be viewed here.

We have also produced a new project video, which can be viewed below.

The RCEP is a new project which aims to carefully extract pulverised fuel ash (PFA) waste deposits from a former landfill and process it to allow it to be reused as a sustainable and low carbon cement replacement product.

IF BUILT, THE RETFORD CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECT WILL:

  • Save in excess of 5 million tonnes of carbon, with each tonne saved equivalent to planting 31-46 trees.

  • Improve local biodiversity through new habitat provision.

  • Net-zero icon

Help the UK to achieve its legally binding net-zero climate targets.

  • Reduce carbon pratices graph icon

Reduce the need for carbon-intensive practices and reduce our reliance on natural resources.

  • Create 20-30 jobs at the site and up to around a further 60 jobs in the local area.

  • Digger icon

Secure a continued supply of PFA for the UK’s construction industry, reducing the reliance on imports from abroad.

  • Supporting innovative technologies based in the UK.

  • Reuse a waste product from coal power generation, bringing it back into productive use.

This website has been produced to introduce you to the project, Hive Aggregates, and progress on our planning application submitted in March 2023.

WHAT IS A ‘CIRCULAR ECONOMY’?

A Circular Economy is a system that looks to tackle global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution. A Circular Economy aims to keep products, materials, equipment and infrastructure in use for longer, therefore minimising the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. It is a concept that is recognised in the Nottinghamshire County Council Waste Local Plan (2022) and the Government’s resources and waste strategy (Defra, 2018).
